In commenting on the IPP Everywhere spec, I observed that the “Requirements” section of the Cloud Requirements and Model document was evolving along a different path. At least, by my interpretation of comments at the f2f meeting, the Use Cases were to present real scenarios and the Design Requirements were to state the design requirements implicit in these scenarios. This is different from the IPP Everywhere spec where, along with other differences, the Design Requirements appear to reflect external requirements and constraints on the design (e.g., the design should “Define conformance profiles that reference the IPP/2.0 versions”) Since the purpose of the Cloud document is in determining requirements and outlining a model addressing those requirements, the different approach seems reasonable. But, to get feedback from the WG before we put too much effort into this approach, I didi a small continuation of the Requirements section. This is posted at ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/cloud/white/wd-cloudmodel%20design%20requirements.pdf,ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/cloud/white/wd-cloudmodel%20design%20requirements.docx. I would like to have the WG look at this approach before proceeding.
Another idea, both in Pete’s and Randy’s emails and inherent in the previous approach of working on the Model and then adding the use cases and requirements, is that aside from the security issues which we have sidestepped, we already know both the requirements and the model design for Cloud Printing. It that is the consensus, the current effort in looking at requirements is unwarranted and all we need say is that Cloud Printing is just any other printing, but has some components in the cloud.
And that brings up another issue. By my understanding, the WG has concluded that the Cloud elements themselves, and the security issues attached to working with the cloud are out of scope, and I have reflected that in the referenced writeup. But although the design of these aspects may be out of scope for use, since this is determined by “Cloud designers”, since the title and intent of this specification is “ Cloud Printing Requirements and Model” , it may be that a extensive consideration of the requirements on all aspects, including what we have called Association, Enumeration, Registration, etc., and the security issues involved, is in scope. Implementation aspects and particular protocols are delegated to the binding documents, but perhaps it would appropriate for this general document to reference specific other documents (other than just the proposed IPP and SOAP binding documents) that provide the details.
I request that these subjects be discussed during today’s call. To justify putting effort into this specification, we must believe that is it useful at least, or perhaps even critical to establishing a consistent method for using hardcopy devices in Cloud oriented activities.
Thanks,
Bill Wagner
