    Hi,

    On the advice of friends, I yesterday downloaded the
    mature and FREE (including for all commercial uses)
    drawing tool Dia, available on essentially all modern
    platforms. It specifically supports UML drawings.
    It aims to exceed Visio in features, but be portable.

    Well worth looking into:
