What I really said was:
>I know some companies have a misguided belief that everything must be standards
>track before they implement it; however, that is clearly not a concern of this
group
>or of the IETF in general.
The Chairman's false and I believe inflammatory characterization of my
statements are
sure to mislead many. The truth is, I believe everyone in the working groups
wants a standards
track IPP; however most of us are patient enough to wait until it is more stable
before turning out
yet another revision.
If this standard is so ready to be published yet again, why were over 20 issues
raised at the
SECOND bake-off? It would seem that if we can find 20 issues in 3 days of
operational
experience in a controlled environment with highly skilled users (read
implementors) then
what are we going to find with 3 to 6 months of real world operational
experience? That means
we will have to revise the standard yet again. It is not entirely impossible
that we could have
three versions of IPP (V1 now, V1.1 in a few months and V1.2 at the end of the
year) issued
in the same year. As an embedded implementor, I'm sure my customer will love
reloading
microcode into their printers over and over again to keep up with all this.
Many of the participants have concurred with my suggestion to stop and catch our
breaths
on this one. Many have expressed those view here on the list and a number of
others
expressed them personally to me and the Chairman at the bake-off. I hope
everyone will
let their opinion be known on this subject. I also hope that the Chairmen will
make an
honest assessment of the consensus of the group untainted by parochial concerns
or
pressures from elsewhere.
