While working with the printers here at Cisco, I wrote a tool to
monitor printers using SNMP. It makes very heavy use of your group's
common printer mib. I thought that everybody would be doing this sort
of thing but in talking to the vendors, they tell me that I'm the only
person that they know of who uses SNMP to administer printers.
Anyway, I have released my tool to the internet and several hundred
people have downloaded and are using it. To my surprise, it seems to be
rather popular. I thought all of you people working on the common
printer MIB might be interested in seeing it and working with it.
It was written in C++ under Linux but people have told me that they
have been able to get it to run without too much hassle under:
FreeBSD 3.0
Irix 6.2
Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.6
HP/UX 10.2 (this port is still a bit shaky)
A web page describing it can be found at
http://www.penguincomputing.com/prtools/npadmin.html and the source
can be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.penguincomputing.com/pub/prtools/npadmin.tar.gz
I am very interested in hearing what all of you think. I am also quite
open to questions, comments, suggestions, and patches whatever.
