I really believe we can gauge consensus pretty quickly by having
the vote on UTF-8 vs. multi-encodings.
I don't recall seeing *any* messages from anyone (lately, anyway)
saying that we should leave the MIB as it current exists (ie, ASCII
only).
Everyone seems convinced that some level of improvement is needed.
In fact, it seems as if everyone readily agrees on which objects
should be targeted for improvement (with a few minor exceptions
that can be quickly worked out).
Along the lines of "which objects should be improved", Dave Kellerman
will be posting a message shortly in which he describes some
considerations the group has not yet discussed.
Since we don't have much time left--and since we don't know when
the Area Directors will respond with their opinions--would it be
reasonable for the PMP group to go ahead and have a straw vote
on the UTF-8 vs. multi-encoding question?

I forwarded this question to our ADs and asked if they had any
advice on it.
People on the mailing list can vote/comment on this, but be sure and
include (briefly) your technical rationale.
Jay had asked earlier:
> What if you're against a proposal because you believe the time
> it would take to assimilate the proposal into the working
> draft would exceed the deadline for the draft?
Then you assess how much time it would take for you to do a
proper evaluation and set of comments and you tell the WG chairs
how much time you would need. (This is happening with
great frequency on the SNMPv3 mailing list.)
Since we are past our deadline, I must ask everyone how much
additional time you believe is required to get to resolution on the
big set of issues (Hasting's Five Alternatives)? 24 hours?, 48
hours? We do need to close down the MIB and the working group.
The mailing list and discussion can continue.
