Pete,
I've received the same concerns from a couple people offline (yes, I asked them to post their comments to the list..) - changed process-monochrome to OPTIONAL but left monochrome, color, and auto as REQUIRED. I have also added a note for this explaining why process-monochrome is OPTIONAL.
