We are talking about tags in a protocol. We could change the attribute name “media-input-tray-check” and the element name ”MediaInputTrayCheck” to “Appletree” and it would not change its semantics. An application, used by people, can use any nomenclature deemed acceptable for the environment. A picture of a tray works just as well as any of the terms you suggested below. The objective of the model is not standardization of user interfaces across the industry. The goal is standardization definitions of the semantics. If the semantics contain a links between “MediaSource”, “MediaInputTrayCheck” and “InputTray” then the Semantic Model should clarify the relationship. I would expect JPS3 to do the same.

Note that the IPP and Semantic Model have mappings to the Printer MIB’s prtInputTable(1.3.6.1.2.1.43.8.2) and prtOutputTable (1.3.6.1.2.1.43.9.2) subunits. The Semantic Model represents the complete subunits while IPP chose a subset of objects of interest. The Semantic Model choose the tags “InputTrays” and “OutputTrays” to map to the MIB objects and documented those mappings in PWG5108.1. There is no direct mapping from IPP’s representation of these MIB objects since the Semantic Model maps its subunit elements (i.e., “Configuration” elements) to the standard object definitions (i.e., RFC3805).

If you are seeking a standard name to put in a UI, perhaps a standard message catalogue may be the answer.
