The following comments do not question that the minutes correctly reflect the meeting, but are addressed to the substance of the reported discussion. References are to page number and line number of the minutes Page 4 Line 25: Default scan ticket: since a scan template is defined as an unbound scan ticket, is not the term default scan template more consistent? Page 5 line 1. Perhaps the indentation is unintended, but are "state, State Reason" etc considered part of Scan ID? Also It would seem that there should be common element in all the scan service headings so that they can all be applied to the same scan service. That is, should not some sort of Scan Service ID should be common. Page 5, line 39: "Service Type" is eliminated because I is said to be in Scan Service Status. Neither do I see service type in Scan Service nor would I consider type to be a status. Of course, it is not clear what the values of Service type are. If they are scan, print, fax etc, then the type may be regarded as inherent in the group names (unless the same group names are used for all services.) Page 6, line 9: Scan Service Capabilities - Would it not be clear if these various attributes were followed by "supported" ? e.g., Number-Up Supported Page 7 Line 1: Since the term "Must Honor" is used exclusively in the discussion, would not "Must honored element list" be more appropriate than JobMandatorELements? Page 7, Line 8: For my own edification, are there clear definitions of element and element attribute? The previous paragraph talked about must honored elements and this paragraph talked about must honored attributes. Page 7, Line 43: I do not follow why page ranges does not make sense for scan. It seems a useful attribute to me. Page 8, line 41: We need some expertise here. For example physical constituents of the CIS vs CCD based scanner are quite different. "Network Scan Service use Cases and Requirements" January 31, 2008. Comments beyond typo and editing corrections 1. The current definition for the term "Scan Document" does not actually state is contains the scanned digital document itself. It states that it contains the "Scan Document Information". a. If this is true, then the term "Digital Document" definition becomes; "The digitized data of the Hardcopy Document." b. If this is true, then the term "Scan Document Data" definition becomes:"The digitized data of the Hardcopy Document. This term is used interchangeable with Digital Document throughout this document." 2. The term "Template Manager Service" has contained in its definition the wording " ... the interfaces for creating, ...maintaining" . I need clarification of the terms "interfaces", "creating" and "maintaining". Does the word "interfaces" mean the Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) or does it mean the user (gui/line-commands/etc) interfaces; I believe it is means APIs but which is the intent? The word creating has the same implication of a GUI or user-interface. However, it may have meant "to create a new template". I would contend that the "Template Manager Service" would provide the services of store and retrieve only. To create a new template, the Scan Client would get an existing template or the default template by a retrieve command to the "Template Manager Service"; the user would modify the retrieve template; the Scan Client would then request the "Template Manager Service" to store the modified template under a new name. Thus, the "Template Manager Service" only performs store and retrieve. As for the word "maintaining", what does this mean? What is being "maintained"? 3. In the definition for "Scan Job Receipt", is the lower-case word "element" meant to be the "XML term" "Element". If not, I would suggest changing the word "element" to remove ambiguity with the XML term "Element". Would the word "attribute" be better? If the term "element" means "Element", then it needs to be capitalized. 4. Should the term "Scan Service Discovery" be added to section 3.2 as term? 5. For Use Case 2: a. I admit to being confused at this point. I thought we were going to eliminate the first paragraph of the use-case. I though this was going to be simple use-case of "Walk up Scanning using an existing Scan Job Template" and not "Walk up Scanning using a pre-defined Scan Job Template". Thus, if this is the former case, the first paragraph can be removed. The discussion we had over the phone was that an IT-department would restrict the user by having a scan client that would not allow restricted fields to be set. b. The word "boundaries" should be changed, since in scanning boundaries will imply the physical scanning area and not boundaries (in pages) between documents. c. This use-case has what I call "Implied Requirements" or "Inferred Requirements" that can not be directly identified by the use-case or the processing steps. For example, Design Req: 2.6 "Must Honor" is not even hinted at in the use-case or the processing steps but this does seem to be the use-case to include it. (We could expand the pervious use-case to discuss these kinds of details.) What I would suggest and have done in my own work is to have a requirements section called "Implied Requirement" as a separate section of the design requirements. These requirements that are not directly identifiable by the use-case but are "under the covers" or that "must be included" to make the use-case be functional. Therefore I would like to suggest the following document modification 6.2.2 Requirements 6.2.2.1 Precondition Requirements Precondition Req: 2.1 The Scan Client SHALL use the Scan Service Directory requirements of section 6.7 6.2.2.2 Design Requirements Design Req: 2.1 ......................... 6.2.2.3 Implied Requirements Implied Req: 2.1 The Scan Service SHALL support a "Must Honor" .................. I have not received further comments since last teleconference. Here is the Last Call comment from the last teleconference, and some comments I have so far for the WG Last Call: #1. From the last teleconference - Comment: Scan Client should only interact with Scan Service. There should be a separate client interact with Scan Template Manager Service. Resolution: We have defined a separate client called Scan Template Manager Client that interacts with Scan Template Mnager Service. The network scanning client application contains a Scan Client and optionally a Scan Template Management Client. The changes have been reflected in the update Model Semantics and Service Interface document. Below are my recommended changes that are essential after the last teleconference: #2 Abstract, IEEE document title, Introduction must be modified to reflect the content is about Use Cases & Requirements, not the model semantics and interfaces. #3 Terminology must be changed to be consistent with the changes in the model semantics and interfaces. The following terms are not referenced in this requirement document and will not be included : - Active Job - Image - Job History #4 In Use Cases 1 & 2, "Scan Client" will be changed to "network scanning client application" in Use Case diagram and processing flow. In the Design Requirements, "Scan Client" will be changed to "network scanning client application" that uses "Scan Client" to request Scan Service operations and uses "Scan Template Manager Client" to request Scan Template Manager Service operations. #5 Remove "Conformance Requirements" section, or make a note that we leave this to the Model Semantics and Service Interfaces for a complete specification. #6 "PWG and IANA Registration Consideration" section - the requirements for PWG Scan service type definition and registration with IANA from service discovery use case should be reiterated and specified here. #7 Remove ?Internationalization Consideration? section, or make a note that we leave this to the Model Semantics and Service Interfaces for a complete specification. Let's discuss your opinions in today's teleconference. -Nancy --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nancy Chen Solutions and Technology Oki Data 2000 Bishops Gate Blvd. Mt. With appropriate minor changes, it can also be used for the corresponding AccessMode element of the Scan Job object. Cheers, - Ira ----------------------------------------------------------------------- AccessMode This element corresponds to the access mode property of a POSIX file and specifies the basic access control policy for the Scan Service object, as set by the Owner. Site-specific policies, e.g., Access Control Lists (ACLs), MUST NOT reduce the security required by this AccessMode element but MAY further restrict that security. The AccessMode element describes the basic access control policy for the Owner, members of the Owner's group (e.g., Administrators), and all other authenticated users (i.e., the 'World'). Typically, only the Owner or a member of the Owner's group (site-specific) is granted the Write permission, but the World is granted Read permission (e.g., to read elements such as capabilities) and Execute permission (e.g., to send Job creation operations to the Scan Service object). Resource is a first-class object in ISO DPA (ISO 10175) - see section 9.8 of ISO 10175-1 - it contains fonts, forms, logos, etc. (so-called "document resources"). In 2008, I wrote an IPP extension for Resources in collaboration Tom Hastings (Xerox) and several contibutors from Novell: ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/ipp/new_RES/draft-ietf-ipp-get-resource-01.txt Ultimately this work was not pursued in the IETF IPP WG, due to several alternate proposals (one object for each Resource type), the inclusion of Driver resources (later separated), and the imminent demise of the IETF IPP WG. But as Ted Tronson (Novell) pointed out in March this year, Novell iPrint supports the private operations: 0x401D novell-resource-add 0x401E novell-resource-list 0x401F novell-resource-delete 0x4020 novell-resource-download One important design constraint - both ISO DPA and the IPP work-in-progress did NOT support "document data". I strongly urge that any new Resource Service SHOULD NOT support the storage or retrieval of "document data". Fonts, etc., have unique copyright and intellectual property constraints that do NOT apply to user document data. Conversely, user document data has privacy and access control constraints very different from fonts, etc. I suggest that you review the IPP work-in-progress for the well-documented set of attributes (properties) of the Resource object. May as well be coherent, while re-inventing the wheel... Cheers, - Ira PS - I would be happy to contribute to the Resource Service spec and to bring some DPA/IPP context to this discussion. -- Ira McDonald (Musician / Software Architect) Chair - Linux Foundation Open Printing WG Blue Roof Music/High North Inc email: blueroofmusic@gmail.com winter: 579 Park Place Saline, MI 48176 734-944-0094 summer: PO Box 221 Grand Marais, MI 49839 906-494-2434 From Peter.Zehler at xerox.com Thu Jul 10 06:12:05 2008 From: Peter.Zehler at xerox.com (Zehler, Peter) Date: Wed May 6 14:00:30 2009 Subject: MFD> No MFD Teleconference this week Message-ID: <1E8895E89BED824DBEDD47CDCA8CC28C03948EA7@USA0300MS04.na.xerox.net> Peter Zehler Xerox Research Center Webster Email: Peter.Zehler@Xerox.com Voice: (585) 265-8755 FAX: (585) 265-7441 US Mail: Peter Zehler Xerox Corp. 800 Phillips Rd. The MFD page on the PWG site has been updated. In addition to the MFD related documents and previous meeting minutes the current schema is available. It is available in a zip file or in HTML forms for browsing. The zip version contains all the schema, WSDL and an XMLSPY project file. One of the HTML view allows navigation through the model starting at its root. Another view provides a table of contents for all the schema files in the model with links to the actual schema file and to any of the types and elements defined within it. The remaining view covers the requests and responses for all the service's operations. We started at three and ended up with five before adjourning. No formal meeting minutes will be posted. As long as we were on the phone I did capture some comments. People with specific comments will send them to Nancy and I. The comments on the Resource service specification that I captured were: 1) On page 8 under Resource Service The clause "There is an instance of Resource Service associated with each MFD Service." should be removed. The Resource Service is just another service on the network and it is not required to be bound to an instance of an MDF. 2) On page 9 the Signature definition needs work. 3) Page 7 Firmware is out of scope. It was also pointed out that when the Template Service was generalized to a Resource Service there was a collision with the existing Resource element in the MFD model. The installed resources for an MFD were renamed to ResidentResources. There needs to be a discussion on the relationship between ResidentResources and the Resources accessible via a Resource Service. This will be added to the Face to Face agenda. 4) There is no required Resource creation function. The PutResource operation should be mandatory. I will be putting out an agenda for the upcoming face to face. Anyone wishing to address specific items during the MFD session should send them to me. The MFD Schema and WSDL files will not be modified until after the Face to Face. The Scan Service specification will also remain unchanged until after the Face to Face. I will leave it to Nancy to determine if she will put out an updated document based on the comments above and those submitted via email by MFD members. The issue is a result of moving to a single namespace for all of the MFD. In a SOAP binding using document/literal encoding, messages are dispatched using the SoapAction or the message name in the body of the request. The implication here is that all operations across the MFD services must have a unique name or they need to be differentiated by namespace. Differentiating service operations by namespace changes the fully qualified name of the operations. We have common administrative operations such as Pause and Resume. We also have some common service specific operations such as CreateJob that share a name but differ in the contents of the parameters. Possible solutions: 1) Change back to multiple namespace approach putting each service in its own namespace. 2) Modify the operation names to include the name of the service in all operations. Proposed solution: I prefer alternative 2. Alternative 1 will cause some extensibility point issues and complicates the structure of the WSDL and schemas. There is some mapping that needs to be done with solution 2 and deployed Web Services (e.g. WS-Scan). I see no problem with that since a mapping is required even if the unqualified operation names are aligned. The mapping required is trivial. If there is no objection, I will make the change before moving to PWG wide Last Call. If anyone wishes to discuss this at a teleconference I can delay sending the document for PWG wide Last Call. Human users should be left to interpret ResourceInfo, e.g., "Freshwater Screensaver - Win32 XP/Vista self-installer 29 October 2008". Resource Repository should just record ResourceType of 'executable' (the 'software' type is ambiguous - is it source or compiled?). Note that *scripts* are often termed executables, but are quite a different level of virus/malware threat. Next Steps Click Here to Join Live Meeting (Note: Live meeting recently released a new version. To save time before the meeting, check your system at Media/MediaCol capabilities issue: In internal prototyping efforts we came across a problem. In higher end printer environments, and even some office environments, the size of the media database can become quite large. Clearly printers must be able to serve up the allowed media in a capabilities request. We have found however that it is quite problematic to have to serve up that same database each and every place that media capabilities occur (e.g. CoverBack, CoverFront, InsertSheet, JobAccountingSheets, ProofPrint). For the most part these capability elements need only indicate if Media and/or MediaCol are allowed in the associated processing element. The DocumentProcessing elements Media and MediaCol allow the entire database of media to be retrieved. Furthermore it is preferable that the media database should be explicitly requested to insure that the client is not inundated with the contents of the media database unless that is what the client desires. I got comments from very few PWG members. According to the PWG Process "If less than 30 percent of the PWG membership have commented, participated, or communicated that they have no comments for a given document during Last Call, the Last Call period is automatically extended until that threshold is met." Therefore I need to get a response from PWG participants. Please send a note to Peter.Zehler@Xerox.com and let me know if you have any comments or if the specification is acceptable as written. Please send me a note even if you have already sent me a response. The Last Call version that has been updated to address all comments to date is available at The Last Call Comments received to date and the resolution are recoded in a document available at As usual the .doc and -rev versions are available in the same directory. Please take the time to respond so we can move the Scan Service along. I want to be sure that we can get this specification to Formal Vote and that it will succeed so it is off the MFD's Working Group's plate. That way we can focus on the other services of an MFD. The MFD specification clarifies the common semantics used by the various user perceived MFD functions. I expect an orchestration service/application would oversee the execution of complex jobs and handle task sequencing and task status rollup and processing. The orchestration service/application can leverage industry standards (e.g. WSCI, BPEL4WS, JDF), be market or vendor specific or, perhaps, eventually select one of those and create MFD orchestration service in its own right. The following are my comments up to page 10. I am not sure this is the level of feedback you were expecting. Glen My comments Page 8, Line 250 -- change "sope" to "scope" Page 10, Line 265 -- Active Jobs - what is the significances of the phrase "instance specific". Can the phrase be removed? It is used in other definitions. -- ADF - In OpenPrinting work, specifically the job-ticketing API, the term "tray" referred to input and the term "bin" referred to output. Thus, my comments are. - Line 3, change "from its bin" to "from its input tray" - Line 6, change "ADF bin" to "ADF output bin" -- Attribute - I find the definition of a generic word like "Attribute" to be a little strange. - From the web I found this "is an entity that defines a property of an object, element, or file. An attribute usually consists of a name and a value. Its definition can be extended by a datatype, a representation format, a default value and restrictions." -- CrossFeed direction - Should there be a space in "CrossFeed", i.e. "Cross Feed" - Should "direction" be capitalized? If it is there for clarification should it be in brackets, i.e. "CrossFeed (direction)", since direction is not part of the term being define but is only being used for clarification - Line 4, I suggest changing "(See also Fast Scan direction, X and $ 7.14)" to "(See diagram in $7.14)" - Line 5, The line should be "The Cross Feed direction is also referred to as the X, X-Feed or Fast Scan direction. I would also move this before the bracketed comment in Line 4. -- DefaultScanJobTicket -- Are we defining the term "Default Scan Job Ticket" or the variable "DefaultScanJobTicket". I would have assumed it was the term and not the variable. This comment apply to other "terms" in the definition table. -- Line 1, the phase "an instance of" implies that the Scan Service is instantiated for each job. 1.) I don't think this is the intent of the meaning and 2.) it implies an how to implement, which we should not address. -- Line 2-5, should the term "values" be elaborated to "Attribute values" (or "attribute values")? -- Destination -- Line 1, The sentence is not a complete sentence, is the phrase "end point" necessary and is it "URI" or "URL"? I suggest "A Destination is a network address (i.e. URL) of a storage ......" -- If the Destination is internal storage, is that really specified by a "network address"? -- Digital Document -- Line 1, The sentence is not a complete sentence and "scan service" should be "Scan Service". I suggest "A Digital Document is the output of a Scan Service containing the digitized data resulting from the scanning of a Hardcopy Document(s)." All/Most of the remaining definition do not have a complete first sentence. If the intent is that the word being defined is to be part of the first sentence, then the first word in the "definition" should not be capitalized; otherwise, the noun (the term being defined) needs to be put into the first . I.e. "Digital Document is the output" or "Directory Service is a" -- Directory Service -- This definition is states or implies a lot of implementation specifies; i.e. organizes, administrator manages, ..... Will the MFD working group create a Directory Service Specification; if not, then we need to use a common definition -- Definitions I found on the web: -- A data source according to ITU specification X.500 that holds data organized in a tree structure -- A software service that integrates with a user/group directory -- A service that provides a white pages-like directory of the users and resources located on an enterprise network -- A directory service is simply the software system [application] that stores, organizes and provides access to information in a directory. ----- I like the last definition -- Fast Scan direction - Is there a space between "Fast Scan" or is it "FastScan". If there is a space should "CrossFeed" be "Cross Feed" - Should "direction" be capitalized? If it is there for clarification should it be in brackets, i.e. "Fast Scan (direction)", since direction is not part of the term being define but is only being used for clarification - Line 4, I suggest making the end of the definition match closer to "Cross Feed" i.e. This is the direction along which the image data is most quickly acquired. If the light bar or media moves, this direction is at a right angle to that movement. The Fast Scan direction is also referred to as the X, X-Feed or Cross Feed direction. (See diagram $7.14) -- Feed direction - Should "direction" be capitalized? If it is there for clarification should it be in brackets, i.e. "Feed (direction)", since direction is not part of the term being define but is only being used for clarification - Line 4, I suggest making the end of the definition match closer to "Cross Feed" i.e. The Feed direction is also referred to as the Y, Y-Feed or Slow Scan direction. I think that, although modeling a conceptual MFD service by service is a practical way to approach this task, there is the possibility of losing or distorting (or never having) an overall perspective. I have redrawn the interfaces diagram, provided some text, attempted a generalization of the terminology, and taken a cut at a generalized ticket life diagram. These are posted at ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/mfd/white/MFD_Outline_Nov_00.doc. I have noticed some roughness in the Scan Service Terminology (I think Glen mentioned it) and a typeo: ?CrossFeed direction This is the direction perpendicular to the movement of the Hard Copy Document or light bar of the scanner. For scanners that use a technology other that a light bar, this is the direction along which the image data is acquired most slowly. (See also Fast Scan direction, X and ?7.1.4) This direction is sometimes referred to as XFeed direction.? I expect the cross-feed is the direction along which the image data is acquired most rapidly. Also, although I thought I understood the ScanJobTicket Lifecycle diagram (Fig 5 in the Scan Service Spec), when Pete explained it, I admit that I found it confusing when I tried to extrapolate a generalized JobTicket diagram, particularly when also looking at earlier versions and at the Multifunction Device Overview diagram (fig 1) in the current spec. If this looks OK to everyone else, I will figure it out. I would appreciate comments on the MFD Outline white paper whether ?it?s a waste of time? or ? it?s a useful document? or whatever is appropriate in between. I found it quite useful and have linked it into the MFD page. I would like to spend a little time at the face to face to work through the confusion around the Job Ticket lifecycle. Having a top level document framing the work of modeling MFD services probably should have been the first step in the MFD group. I was already actively working print and scan in a number of forums. As we move forward with services, at least partially, built with the semantic definitions established in print and scan this overall view paper will be useful. I have noticed some roughness in the Scan Service Terminology (I think Glen mentioned it) and a typeo: "CrossFeed direction This is the direction perpendicular to the movement of the Hard Copy Document or light bar of the scanner. For scanners that use a technology other that a light bar, this is the direction along which the image data is acquired most slowly. (See also Fast Scan direction, X and ?7.1.4) This direction is sometimes referred to as XFeed direction." I expect the cross-feed is the direction along which the image data is acquired most rapidly. I would appreciate comments on the MFD Outline white paper...whether "it's a waste of time" or " it's a useful document" or whatever is appropriate in between. I need some response from the PWG at large. I need responses from member companies whether they have Last Call comments on the specification or not. I need responses from PWG members to meet the Last Call process requirements. Please send a note to Peter.Zehler@Xerox.com and let me know if you have any comments or if the specification is acceptable as written. Please send me a note even if you have already sent me a response. I need responses by close of business December 3rd in order to present the results at the December 5th MFD session.
